Fostering FAQs
What types of dogs need foster homes?
All dogs that come to our rescue need a foster home! We save dogs of all ages from puppies to seniors. Some dogs may have medical needs or minor behavioral needs; however, our foster counselors will pair you with a dog that matches your preferences and lifestyle
What is expected of me as a foster?
LCAL will cover all expenses related to medical treatment, vaccines, preventatives and food. Additionally, we will provide all supplies such as a bed, crate, leash, collar, bowls, toys, bones, etc. What we ask our fosters to provide is a safe, comfortable and loving home with structure and security for our dogs. Additionally, you may be asked to bring your dog to monthly adoption events, medical appointments and provide information and photos of your pup for our social media and website teams.
How long do dogs stay in foster care?
All our dogs are in foster care until they are adopted, and this timing can range from weeks to months based on many factors such as breed, age, medical needs, etc. Generally, we like our dogs to stay with the same family until adoption, but we do understand that at times they may need to transfer or stay with temporary fosters while you are away on vacation. In the event you need a transfer or temporary coverage, we ask you to give your foster counselor a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice to make alternative arrangements when possible.
What if it does not work out with the foster dog and our family?
Often dogs coming from a shelter will need a time of decompression. Remember they have been through a lot by the time they reach your home! The first 2 weeks are often a transition, and our foster counselors will provide tips and training techniques to address challenges you may be having during this integration time. If at any time there is a safety concern to human or other furry family members, we ask our fosters to contact their foster counselor immediately to address the issue. If a dog needs to be removed from a home, we will work to find alternative arrangements, which may take up to a week. We address each foster placement on a case-by-case basis and if a dog needs to be removed immediately, arrangements would be made.
Can I adopt my foster dog?
Absolutely! We love when our foster families fall in love and don’t want to part with their foster dog! If you decide you would like to adopt your foster dog, contact your foster counselor immediately to let them know. Often there is a lot going on behind the scenes with applications and adoptions, so please note that while we cannot guarantee your dog will stay with you, we make every reasonable effort to keep the dogs in the loving home they are acclimated to.
